Tua Tagovailoa built his reputation as one of college football’s most exciting quarterbacks at the University of Alabama, where he earned a long list of awards and helped lead the Crimson Tide to a national championship. The Miami Dolphins selected him with the fifth overall pick in the 2020 NFL Draft, beginning a six-season run in Miami that included some of the most productive passing seasons in franchise history.
Tagovailoa originally signed a four-year rookie contract worth approximately $30.3 million, including a signing bonus of about $19.6 million. After turning pro, he moved to South Florida, purchased a new home, bought gifts for his family, and started building a modest but interesting car collection.
Tua Tagovailoa is the oldest of four children and grew up in Ewa Beach, Hawaii. He developed a love for football at an early age, with his parents recalling that he would often sleep with a football in his arms.
As a young player, he set numerous records at Saint Louis School in Honolulu before being recruited by the University of Alabama. During his college career, he earned honors including the Orange Bowl MVP, Maxwell Award, Walter Camp Award, SEC Offensive Player of the Year, and College Football Playoff National Championship Offensive MVP.
With his college days behind him, Tagovailoa was selected by the Miami Dolphins with the fifth overall pick in the 2020 NFL Draft. One of his first major purchases after turning pro was a lakeside, 5,200-square-foot home in Davie, Florida, with six bedrooms, 4.5 bathrooms, and a swimming pool. He also bought his father a Rolex and began adding cars for himself and his family.

One of the first cars in Tua’s collection was a top-of-the-line BMW i8 performance car. Although the BMW i8 is a plug-in hybrid rather than a traditional gasoline-powered sports car, it combines an electric motor with a turbocharged three-cylinder engine and can accelerate from 0 to 60 mph in roughly 4.4 seconds.
The BMW i8 uses a 1.5-liter turbocharged three-cylinder engine paired with an electric motor and a lithium-ion battery. Its lightweight carbon-fiber-reinforced structure helps give the car impressive performance while maintaining the efficiency of a plug-in hybrid. When new, well-equipped BMW i8 models could approach $150,000.

Tua Tagovailoa’s BMW i8 combines exotic styling with plug-in hybrid performance and can accelerate from 0 to 60 mph in roughly 4.4 seconds.
At about the same time, Tua expanded his car collection again by purchasing an all-wheel-drive Ford Flex. The Ford Flex is a spacious three-row crossover that can accommodate up to seven passengers with plenty of room for family and friends.
The Ford Flex cabin offers a number of comfort and technology features, including an available 12-speaker Sony audio system, Ford’s SYNC 3 touchscreen infotainment system, Apple CarPlay, and Android Auto capability. Unlike the BMW i8, however, the Flex was designed more for space and practicality than fuel economy.
#2 Ford Flex SUV

The Ford Flex became one of Tua Tagovailoa’s practical daily drivers while he was living in South Florida.
Why did Tua buy two cars so quickly? When asked about the purchases, he explained that the Ford Flex was useful when family members came to visit, while the much lower BMW i8 was mostly for himself.
“So after I got my Mom a car, I ended up getting myself two cars. I ended up getting a Ford Flex and then a BMW i8. The reason behind me getting two cars is so when my parents or my family members come to town, you know they can use either one of the cars.” He chuckled and continued, “But the BMW I got because I knew no one else can get down that low in the car. And so I knew no one else would want to drive the BMW.”
#3 Brand New 2020 Cadillac Escalade

Tua Tagovailoa bought his mother a brand-new 2020 Cadillac Escalade as a Mother’s Day gift, reportedly spending around $80,000.
One of Tua Tagovailoa’s first major vehicle purchases after turning pro was a brand-new 2020 Cadillac Escalade for his mother. He purchased the Escalade as a Mother’s Day gift. Tua explained:
“She always wanted a really nice and big family car, and so that’s why I got that car.”
In a social media post, Tua explained that he relied on his marketing team to help arrange the last-minute Mother’s Day purchase of the 2020 Escalade.
The 2020 Cadillac Escalade is a full-size luxury SUV with plenty of the comfort and technology expected from Cadillac. Features include an 8.0-inch touchscreen infotainment system, leather upholstery, heated and ventilated seats, available parking assistance, a premium sound system, and a powerful 6.2-liter V8 engine producing 420 horsepower. When new, the Escalade carried a base price of roughly $75,000 to $80,000, depending on trim and equipment.
And there you have it. Tua Tagovailoa’s reported car collection from his early NFL years includes a BMW i8, a Ford Flex, and the 2020 Cadillac Escalade he purchased for his mother. While it may not rival the massive collections associated with Tom Brady or Aaron Rodgers, the collection reflects a mix of performance, practicality, and family generosity.

In 2024, Tagovailoa completed a career-high 72.9 percent of his passes while throwing for 2,867 yards, 19 touchdowns, and seven interceptions in 11 games.

Shortly after his release, the Atlanta Falcons signed Tagovailoa to a one-year contract, giving the veteran quarterback a fresh start and an opportunity to compete for playing time in Atlanta.
