Bonhams Auction House is gearing up for a premier one-day car auction, featuring a carefully curated selection of more than fifty historically significant classic cars. This one-day auction will take place on September 29, 2023, at the iconic International Tennis Hall of Fame in Newport, Rhode Island, known worldwide for its rich automotive heritage.
Bonhams is a world-renowned auction house with an impeccable reputation for partnering with top-notch car events and breaking records along the way. For instance, on August 18, 2023, at the Bonhams Quail Lodge auction in Pebble Beach, Bonhams set a new record when it sold a 1967 Maranello Concessionaires’ Ferrari 412P for $30,255,000. This year, Bonhams is delighted to partner with Audrain Motor Week to offer this premier auction opportunity. The Bonhams auction will open up bidding on September 29th, 2022 hosted at the prestigious International Tennis Hall of Fame, located in the Von Auersperg Building on Freebody Street in Newport, Rhode Island 02840. The auction will start promptly at, 4:00 pm.

Overall, Bonhams will offer 55 of the finest collectible cars on the market in a one-day auction. Mostly European cars, there will be a handful of American brands such as Cadillac, Packard, and Cobra. But the bulk of the cars will carry such famous marques as Austin Healey, Jaguar, Bentley, Porsche, Mercedes, and Alfa Romeo, just to name a few.
The two oldest cars up for auction are a 1922 Bentley 3-Liter Short Chassis Tourer (opening at US$250,000) and a 1915 Mercer Series 22-70 Sporting (starting at US$110,000).
On the other side of the calendar is a 1973 Porsche 911 Carrera RS 2.7 “Lightweight,” estimated at US$450,000, and a 1977 Aston Martin V8 Series 3 Sports Saloon, with a starting bid of US$70,000.
But the most anticipated cars at the auction will be a 1960 Mercedes-Benz 300SL Roadster, a 1960 Aston Martin DB4 Series II Sports Saloon, and lastly, a 1958 Porsche 356A T2 1600 Speedster.
Here are two stunning classic cars up for auction at the Bonhams Auction. They include a 1960 Mercedes-Benz 300SL Roadster and a 1960 Aston Martin DB4 Series II Sports Saloon.
#1. One of the most anticipated cars at the Bonhams auction will be this 1960 Mercedes-Benz 300SL Roadster, offered from the James Messenger car collection. This Roadster is an icon within the car collector community and is often referred to as “one of the finest sports cars of all time”. The Mercedes 300SL Gullwings of 1960 became a racing legend as they racked up many victories across Europe and America.
The car has an original 2,996cc SOHC Inline 6-Cylinder Engine and Bosch Mechanical Fuel Injection that boasts an impressive 225bhp at 5,800rpm. The Gullwing is predicted be be one of the top sellers at Bonham’s Audrain Newport Auction, with an estimated selling price starting at US $1,200,000.
#2. Another beauty is this extremely rare 1960 Aston Martin DB4 Series II Sports Saloon with Coachwork by Carrozzeria Touring Superleggera which is only one of 349 Series 2 DB4s produced. Under the hood is a 3,670cc DOHC Inline 6-Cylinder Engine with Triple SU carburetors. Amazing for the day, the car is capable of producing 240bhp at 5,000rpm.
This Aston Martin DB4 Series II Sports Saloon is estimated to sell at the Bonhams Auction for between US$500,000 and US$600,000. It is also offered from the car collection of the James Messenger Estate.
The 1958 Porsche 356A T2 1600 Speedster is one of the most iconic sports cars of all time. With its timeless design, this vintage Porsche is the epitome of both elegance and performance. Its sleek lines and open-top design capture the essence of a bygone era, while its 1600cc engine delivers a thrilling driving experience. The Speedster is a true collector’s dream car, representing the pinnacle of Porsche craftsmanship from the late 1950s.
#3. If Lastly, it you’re looking for good value, then look no further than this 1958 Porsche 356A T2 1600 Speedster with Coachwork by Reutter. This classic is a must for any serious Porsche collector. The 356A model is the final production year for the legendary Speedster and is one of only 552 Speedsters produced in 1958.
The Reutter-designed classic is powered by a 1,582cc OHV Flat Four-Cylinder engine with 2 Twin-Choke Zenith carburetors. Combined, the engine creates VW-type power at 60bhp at 4,500rpm but corners like a mad dog. This particular 1958 Porsche 356A Speedster was part of the James Messenger Estate car collection and will start the bidding at an estimated US$350,000.
