RM Sotheby’s Pebble Beach Auction Auctioneer Selling an Expensive Car

The RM Sotheby’s auction in Monterey, set for August 17-19, 2023, aims to surpass its previous record of $239M, the highest-ever for a collector car auction. This event is a key event of the Pebble Beach Concours d’Elegance week, held at the Monterey Conference Center each year since 1997.

Last year’s standout sale was a 1955 Ferrari 410 Sport Spider, auctioned for $22,005,000, making it the 15th car to cross the $20 million mark. Other notable sales included a 1937 Mercedes-Benz 540 K Spezial Roadster at $9,905,000, a 300 SL Alloy Gullwing for $5,010,000, and a 1998 Ferrari F300 with an undisclosed price.

Following the success of the previous year, where the auction set global records, Sotheby’s returns to the Monterey Peninsula for its 26th annual premier sale, featuring a fresh lineup of rare and sought-after classic and vintage vehicles.

AUCTION SUMMARY DATES AND TIMES

  • RM Sotheby’s Monterey will take place at the Monterey Conference Center in Monterey, CA, between August 17–19, 2023.

FEATURED CARS UP FOR AUCTION 2023

This year’s auction is poised to shatter previous records with an even more prestigious lineup of classic automobiles. The star of the show is a rare 1964 Ferrari 250 LM, one of only 32 ever made. This iconic vehicle, known for its rich racing history. including participation in Le Mans, has been meticulously restored to its original specifications by Ferrari Classiche. It is expected to fetch between $18,000,000 and $20,000,000.

1964 Ferrari 250 LM by Scaglietti race car

This 1964 Ferrari 250 LM by Scaglietti is among the top sellers at the Sotheby’s Monterey Auction and is expected to sell for upwards of $18 million dollars. This particular 250 is the 22nd of only 32 examples ever built and raced at the 1968 24 Hours of Le Man.


Another potential record-breaker is the highly collectible 1957 Jaguar XKSS, one of the most original and best-preserved XKSS examples in existence. It is anticipated to sell for between $12,000,000 – $14,000,000. This is the same type of Jaguar XKSS that American actor Steve McQueen owned for personal use painted British racing green. He used to call the car the “Green Rat.”

This 1957 Jaguar XKSS  is one of the most sought-after of all roadgoing Jaguars because it is literally a D-type race car for the street. Only 16 were built and sold at the time, and this rare XKSS is expected to sell for above $12 million.

The 1960 Ferrari 250 GT SWB California Spider by Scaglietti is also expected to set new selling records, with an estimated price of $9,500,000 – $11,500,000 USD. This California Spider has a distinguished history, having placed 3rd in class and 19th overall at the 1962 Targa Florio, and showcased at the Cavallino Classic, the Amelia Island Concours d’Elegance, and Retromobile.

This highly collectible 1960 Ferrari 250 GT SWB California underwent three years of restoration by Italian craftsmen and then certification by Ferrari Classiche. The car is a rare find as it retains matching-numbers engine, gearbox, and rear axle examples, as documented by its Ferrari Classiche Red Book.


In the Porsche racing category, the 1956 Porsche 550A Prototype ‘Le Mans’ Werk’s Coupe, a championship dominator since 1951. This 550 had a successful privateer racing history until 1968 with John Edgar, Jack McAfee, Ken Miles, Jean-Pierre Kunstle, and others. The cars were previously part of the famous Palmaz Collection of early Porsche prototype competition cars and was showcased at the 2015 Amelia Island Concours dElegance. This 1956 Porsche 550A Prototype ‘Le Mans’ Werk’s Coupe is expected to bring in between $5,500,000 – $7,500,000 USD.

This 1956 Porsche 550A Prototype An irreproachable, historically significant, museum-grade piece of Porsche Werks’ legendary motorsports heritage took 1st in class and 5th overall at the 1956 24 Hours of Le Mans as a Porsche Werks factory. This example is chassis 550A-0104 and is the sole surviving example of this type. The 1956 Porsche 550A Prototype ‘Le Mans’ Werks Coupe is priced at $5,500,000–$7,500,000.


The auction will also feature a 2001 Ferrari 550 Maranello built by Prodrive, a five-time participant in the 24 Hours of Le Mans, priced at $8,000,000 – $9,500,000. The racing version of the 550 Maranello was built by Prodriveand will be remembered in the history books as the last 12-cylinder Ferraris to win in a Le Man’s race – and the most successful GT sports car of our era.

This 2001 Ferrari 550 Maranello Prodrive is a five-time entrant in the 24 Hours of Le Mans and the most successful 12-cylinder Ferrari chassis in history. This car has won five victories, 14 podium finishes, and 10 pole positions.

This Ferrari 550 Maranello race car is perfect for any racing enthusiast still looking to work out some laps. In fact, the racer is ready to go and still highly eligible for the Ferrari Club Competizione GT program, Le Mans Classic, and the burgeoning Masters Endurance Legends and Endurance Racing Legends series. As a collector car, the car was Certified by the Ferrari Classiche in Maranello.

In its heyday, the 550 Maranello took the GTS class pole position in the 2002 24 Hours of Le Mans, 2nd in the 2003 American Le Mans Series, and 3rd in the 2005 Le Mans Endurance Series. It won five victories, 14 podium finishes, and 10 pole positions. Moreover, it is the third of only 10 Ferrari 550 Maranello Prodrives to be raced in a period on behalf of Care Racing Development. Later, the car was acquired from Ferrari by Frédéric Dor, the founder of Care Racing Development and the father of the Ferrari 550 Maranello Prodrive project.


There are two Ferrari 410 Superamerica Coupes up for sale this year. They include a 1956 Ferrari 410 Superamerica Coupe Series I by Pinin Farina, priced between $1,600,000 – $2,200,000 USD, and a 1959 Ferrari 410 Superamerica Coupe Series III by Pinin Farina, priced a little more at between $5,750,000 – $6,750,000.

The latter, the 1959 Ferrari 410 Superamerica Coupe Series III by Pinin Farina, carries a heavier price due to its amazing car history and pedigree. The 1959 Superamerica is the fourth of 12 Series III examples ever built, and only one of only seven cars factory-equipped with specially covered headlights. It was completely restored by RM Auto Restoration from 2017–2020 and is certified by the Ferrari Classiche Red Book. The car certification includes serial matching numbers for the engine, gearbox, and rear differential.

From the esteemed Terence E. Adderley Car Collection, a selection of vintage vehicles is set to be a highlight at the Sotheby’s Monterey Auction. Recognized globally for its exceptional quality and carefully curated models, primarily from the pre-War era, the Adderley collection is eagerly awaited by discerning collectors.

Among the most anticipated cars is a 1931 Duesenberg Model J Tourster by Derham, which is estimated to fetch between $1,600,000 – $2,000,000 USD. This Duesenberg, along with some pre-war Bugattis, a rare Cord, and a Rolls-Royce once owned by actress Marlene Dietrich, was hidden during World War II.

Above is a 1931 Duesenberg Model J Tourster by Derham from the Terence E. Adderley Collection. The Dusey is highly collectible, partly due to the matching serial numbers on the chassis, firewall, engine, and coachwork. The car is so remarkable that it is Certified by the Auburn Cord Duesenberg (ACD) and is a Classic Car Club of America (CCCA) Full Classic.

Other classic vehicles from the Adderley collection include a 1956 Porsche 356A 1600 Super Speedster, a 1956 Mercedes-Benz 300SL Gullwing, and a 1927 Miller 91 Supercharged Front Drive “Perfect Circle” race car. Also featured are a 1971 Ferrari 365 GTB/4 Daytona Coupe and a Reutter.
