Auction Summary

AUCTION DETAILS

The Newman/Haas Racing team has a winning history that places them among the top Indy Car teams with an overall record of 108 victories and 8 championship seasons.

The team formed by Carl Haas and Paul Newman dominated the CART and Champ Car championships between 1983 and 2011, fielding undeniable superstars like Michael and Mario Andretti, Nigel Mansell, and Sébastien Bourdais, and forever altered the history of motorsport.

The private team is now preparing for its most public event in a long time: an international auction of Newman/Haas Racing’s prized, race-tested chassis and several historical relics, which will be held at RM Sotheby’s.

Lola-Cosworth race cars

On the left is a 1984 Lola-Cosworth T800 driven by Mario Andretti and is expected to sell for $500,000 – $800,000 USD. The Lola is powered by a 2.65-liter Cosworth Ford DFX V-8 good for approximately 800 horsepower. On the right is a 1993 Lola-Ford Cosworth T93/00 driven by Nigel Mansellwith an asking price of $400,000 – $900,000 USD. The race car is equipped with a potent turbocharged, dual-overhead-camshaft Ford Cosworth XB V-8.

The partnership that Haas formed with Paul Newman to start Newman/Haas Racing in 1983 is without a doubt the most well-known and enduring in his career. Even though Haas and Newman in the Can-Am era were strong rivals, they had the same ambition of dominating the IndyCar standings.

Mario Andretti, a seasoned contender in many other formats, was the inspiration behind the team’s success. Andretti won the CART PPG Indy Car World Series while operating a 1984 Lola-Cosworth Ford, finishing first six times out of six starts.

Two Cars a 1999 Swift-Ford Race Car and a 1948 MG TC

On the left is a 1999 CART FedEx Championship Series Newman/Haas Race Car that was piloted by Michael Andretti,  auction price of $40,000 – $60,000 USD  Without Reserve.  The car on the right is a 1948 MG TC that had been in the HASS/NEWMAN car collection since 1995 and was a favorite amongst the team. The MG is expected to sell for $30,000 – $50,000 USD Without Reserve.

Not just Mario Andretti would be a driver for Newman/Haas Racing. In 1991, Michael Andretti won the Indy Car World Series in his second season with the squad.

In addition to being first to field Bobby Rahal’s son Graham and Emerson Fittipaldi’s nephew Christian, Newman/Haas Racing is renowned for offering the second generation of other notable drivers their first opportunity to compete on a big platform.

Each racing suit is expected to sell for $4,000 – $6,000 USD without reserve.

The winning streak with Williams continued in 1993, and Haas pulled off a miracle by luring Nigel Mansell away from Formula One.

Mansell became the first person in history to win back-to-back titles in both F1 and Indy car in the same year after winning five straight races and the PPG Indy Car World Series trophy.

Haas’ capacity as a talent scout extended further. After seven races and seven pole positions, young racer Cristiano da Matta won the 2002 Indy Car world championship nine years later.
The most decorated driver in Champ Car history, Sébastien Bourdais, began his ascent for the Newman/Haas team a year later.

The outcome was remarkable, with Bourdais winning the title from 2004 to 2007 for four years in a row. The Champ Car series itself was discontinued the year after, hence Bourdais’ record will never be surpassed.

40 race cars poster

Over 40 race cars are up for auction from famed drivers like Michael and Mario Andretti, Nigel Mansell, and Sébastien Bourdais. The team dominated both the CART and Champ Car series between 1983 and 2011 under the leadership on Paul Neuman and Carl Haas.

The house that Haas developed is still strong today. Carl Haas forever changed the landscape of competitive driving in this nation, having been dubbed the largest importer of race components on the American continent.

With his strong eye for on-track abilities complementing his taste in exquisite art, Haas enjoyed a life that any enthusiast would aspire to. The products of Haas’ success are now being made available to the general public for the first time.

These race-tested chassis continue to provide a comprehensive account of the Newman/Haas team’s commitment to winning and their undeniable winning pattern—a foundation that will live on in infamy forever. Haas built a mansion that will endure forever.
